State Symbols of Kazakhstan
State Flag

The flag is one of the main symbols of a state, representing its sovereignty and identity. The term “flag” originates from the Dutch word “vlag”. A flag is a piece of cloth of established dimensions and colors, usually with an emblem or coat of arms, attached to a pole or cord.

The state flag of independent Kazakhstan was officially adopted in 1992. Its author is artist Shaken Niyazbekov.

The flag of the Republic of Kazakhstan is a rectangular sky blue cloth with a golden sun in the center with rays, and a soaring eagle (berkut) beneath it. On the flagpole side, there is a vertical band with a national ornamental pattern. The sun, its rays, the eagle, and the ornament are depicted in gold. The flag’s width-to-length ratio is 1:2.

In heraldic traditions, each color symbolizes a certain value. Sky blue symbolizes honesty, loyalty, and integrity. In Turkic culture, it holds deep symbolic meaning. Ancient Turks revered the sky as their father-god, and their sky-blue banners symbolized loyalty to their divine ancestor.

The eagle represents power, sovereignty, and spiritual height. The golden sun symbolizes abundance and energy. The ornamental pattern near the pole represents the cultural code of the Kazakh people.

State Emblem

The emblem is one of the main symbols of a state. The term “emblem” derives from the German word “erbe” meaning “heritage”.

The emblem of sovereign Kazakhstan was officially adopted in 1992. It was created by architects Zhandarbek Malibekov and Shot-Aman Ualikhanov.

The central element is the shanyrak – the top of a yurt, from which supporting beams (uyk) radiate. It is flanked by mythical winged horses. At the top is a star, and at the bottom is the word "Qazaqstan". All elements are depicted in gold against a sky blue background.

The shanyrak symbolizes unity and home. The tulpars represent strength and progress. Their wings resemble ears of wheat – a symbol of labor and abundance. The star signifies aspiration for light and cooperation.

State Anthem

The anthem is one of the main symbols of a state. The term “anthem” originates from the Greek word “gimneo”, meaning “solemn song”.

In the history of independent Kazakhstan, the anthem has been adopted twice – in 1992 and 2006.

The current anthem is based on the song “Menin Qazaqstanym”. The music was composed by Shamshi Kaldayakov and the lyrics were written by Zhumeken Nazhimedenov. The text was revised for the anthem by Nursultan Nazarbayev.

The anthem symbolizes love for the homeland, the people’s aspiration for peace, unity, and prosperity. It is an important part of national identity and pride.
